Library Introduces Legal Resource Index Service

We are pleased to announce that the Supreme Court Criminal Term Library in New York City has just introduced a new computer based service to enable both judges and other library users, including the public, to quickly gain access to a broad range of information with a minimum amount of intervention. The center can be thought of as a greatly enhanced electronic index area. It is designed to add value to research performed on individual workstations. Our blog is incorporated directly into this new service.

Preliminary Results of Law Library Blogs Survey

I’m working on an article for Law Library Journal on the topic of blogs. It will be a piece on the state of the law library blogosphere: Who is blogging? What are we blogging about? Who reads our blogs? What technologies are we using? and Have our blogs been successful?

Blog Etiquette - Is It OK to "Copy & Paste" from Another Blog?

The other day a colleague at Hamline University Law Library emailed me with the following question. With her permission, I'm posting it here along with my response.

Does anyone else have anything to add on this issue?

Question: I have a question about etiquette. I have noticed that many blogs seem to just "copy and paste" information from other blogs--it is attributed (usually) to the original blog or writer, but I am wondering whether it is proper and accepted practice in the "BlogWorld" to do this? Also, are there any copyright implications?

My Response: As far as blog etiquette goes, I think that reposting someone else's post if ok, as long as you attribute it to the source. I've seen this all over the blogosphere. However, I would question the value of a blog that did nothing but "copy and paste" and had little original content of its own.

I think that the best combination is to post about what you've seen in other blogs, but also to add in your own thoughts or tailor it to your specific audience. I have, on occasion, I admit, simply duplicated someone else's post (with attribution, of course). But I try not to do it too often, and only when I feel that I really don't have anything to add.

Introducing Slaw! Canadian Legal Research and IT Blog

Just to let my fellow CS-SIS bloggers know, a new group blog geared towards Canadian Legal Research has just been launched - called Slaw. The initial group of core contributors is listed here, and the RSS feed here. The official description...

Slaw is a co-operative weblog about Canadian legal research and the impact of technology on it. Our audience includes practicing lawyers, legal librarians, legal academics and students - anyone, in short, who uses IT in researching the law. The aim is to share information, offer advice and instruction, and occasionally provoke.

In the Dealer's Room, er, Exhibit Hall

In a recent Connecting, I speculated that some exhibitors would give away USB flash drives this year. I didn't get as much chance to scour the room as I would have liked, but I must admit I don't think I saw anyone give away flash drives, though at least one vendor offered them as prizes. Did anyone else see any? Frankly, I was quite surprised.

That said, there were plenty of goodies to go around. The most popular one this year was bottled water -- good call in hot, humid San Antonio. Less thirst-quenching were the several bags of chips and pretzels I collected. Some places had stuffed animals, many had bags of one sort or another, and there were lots of pens. And boo to the one vendor who chastised me for using his competitor's pen!

There are a few items I may keep, like CALI's carabiner/flashlight (in case, say, I want to go mountain climbing in Chicago some time). Anyone see any freebies they particularly liked?

Welcome to San Antonio

CS-SIS has been really busy in San Antonio. It's only the 2nd (official) day of the annual AALL conference and already we've had an executive board meeting, a business meeting, and two wonderful presentations!

We still have two roundtables coming up, one on being a webmaster and the other on instructional technology, as well as our annual program planning meeting. We still have three presentations coming up (all on Wednesday -- if you can hang on till the end of the conference you'll learn a lot of wonderful information). Karaoke is tomorrow (yay). And, of course, our breakfast meeting is in just a few minutes! I hope to see you all there and our various events. (I'm sure I forgot something.)

By the way, if you hear me say "the dealer's room", I mean the exhibit hall (old habit, sorry).

Welcome to the New CS-SIS Blawgs Committee Blog

The CS-SIS Blawgs Committee has a new cyber home. Although we were happy with our old digs at Bloki, we learned that this application is no longer being supported. As such, we were unable to add any new members as contributors.

So, we've made the move over to Blogger. Unfortunately, our new home doesn't support some of the neat Bloki features such as wikis and forums. We are, however, searching for separate applications that will support those features. Stay tuned for further developments.

All committee members have been sent invitations to join the new blog. We hope that the transition will be an easy one.

We invite anyone else interested in joining the CS-SIS Blawgs Committee to contact Co-Chairs Bonnie Shucha (bjshucha@wisc.edu) or Debbie Ginsberg (dginsberg@kentlaw.edu). The more the merrier!
